ABOUT

Fanning out from the Repatriates project’s center in Vienna this study covers the 500 years of colonial engagement between Austria and America, detailed in the many parts of a 500 feather crown called Quetzalapanecoatl. Characterized by a series of experimental engagements with the Weltmuseum Vienna, it combines historical and speculative research. Storytelling with a polyphonic method is our for finding the resonance of such things. In lecture performances, museum education, activism and film this work unfolds the contested perspectives on European imperial history. Whilst Austria’s geopolitics are unique, this project demonstrates how an understanding of postcolonial and post-war repatriation in a comparative framework will help address the ethical challenges faced by institutions worldwide, who need to mediate ethically across cultures in their displays of art and material culture.
