Joel Haikali is a Namibian filmmaker, director, and producer dedicated to telling African stories with authenticity and cultural depth. As the founder and director of Joe Vision Production (JVP), Joel has significantly contributed to the Namibian film industry through feature films, documentaries, and television productions. His commitment to using storytelling for healing and social change is evident in his various projects addressing intergenerational trauma and socio-cultural issues in Namibia. Alongside film production, Joel creates safe spaces for healing through storytelling in various formats, encouraging dialogue and reflection within communities. Accordingly, Joel an Sophie, are interested in bringing together traditional knowledge, cultural narratives and storytelling such as in the traditional doll making workshop. They also spearheaded the Creative Industry Initiative and the Propaganda Prop Shop, further enriching Namibia’s cultural heritage and creative economy. Joel holds a Master’s degree in Film and wrote his thesis on the sustainability of the Namibian film industry. Joel and Sophie have been documenting discussions about the repatriation of cultural objects from Germany to Namibia and exploring the potential opportunities for restitution.
